Michael Jr Shoot

So this last weekend, Sept. 26-28, 2008 I got to shoot B roll for a documentary called “On the road less traveled.” featuring stand-up comedian Michael Jr. I used the HDR-FX1, a Davis and Sanford Steady Stick, a Miller DS-10 Tripod, Rode Videomic, and Litepanels’ LPMicro and LPMini. It was a great experience, shooting 20+ hours of footage, and not having to edit any of it.

Shots and footage from that shoot will be posted soon. For now, here’s a short video edit I did for Michael Jr. He has a show coming up in November and needed some clips cut together with information added. So without further ado, here’s that video:

Here’s some photos from my last shoot. It was for a 2-man Band who plays cover tunes for high end corperate gigs and parties all around the Seattle area. Producing some video for them to have up on youtube and as a resume builder.

Testing the Sony UWP-V6 Wireless System

Last week I got to help test the Sony UWP-V6 wireless system. Aimed to compete directly against the Sennheiser EW-100 (and the UWP-V1 would be competing against the EW-112 for $50 less), this is a pretty solid system.

The Sony definitely has some features that Come in handy. The antennas are rigid and pivot, so you can direct them easily without having to move the whole receiver pack. The controls are located on the face of the unit, so you don’t have to pop it open to push anything, however this could result in accidental pushing.

The Sony and the Sennheiser are very comparable when it comes to range, and if anything I’d give the edge to the Sony. However, up close Guy’s iPhone caused a little signal interference. We have communicated this to Sony and once our video is sent off I’m sure they’ll make the necissary adjustments.

The biggest suprise was that both systems’ plug-on transmitters worked great at a distance of about 200′+. Even Guy was suprised by this.

Both systems are solid wireless solutions, and for the price point, you can’t go wrong either way. We’re working on finishing up the videos from our test shoot with it, and upon completion I’ll be posting the video here. Until then, if you want to know more, simply visit The DVeStore

First Music Video Shoot

So I’m starting to produce video. Locally of course, and fairly low-budget, however I get use of some awesome gear courtesy of Guy Cochran and the DVeStore (www.dvestore.com) The first run of videos I’m doing is for a Seattle band called Boneriver. Good guys, solid musicians, and it’s been a pleasure to shoot them and create the video. In final stages of post-production, I’ll post the vids when they’re complete and approved. For now, here’s what I was using;

Sony FX-1 HDV Camcorder

Mounted on a Miller DS10 Tripod head with Miller sticks.

Lighting was basically a Rifa 55 softbox (excellent for on-the-go shooting) and a few spotlights. Also had the Litepanels Micro mounted on the hotshoe of the FX-1.

Which provided excellent boosts of light when needed.

The first video, “Can’t Walk the Line” was the hardest to shoot for a number of reasons. Trying to light the band evenly was difficult, as well as getting them all to play exactly as they had on the recording. But that’s the magic of post-production.

The outcome of these videos probably won’t be MTV quality video, but it will be something everyone involved will be proud of. After this, it’s on to more music videos (hopefully) as well as hoping to expand to covering corperate gigs and possibly even weddings as well. More to follow.
